A coach screw is a hexagonal headed heavy duty woodscrew that screws straight into timber or masonry when using a plastic plug.
Drilling a pilot hole is required to prevent splitting of the timber.
In softwoods the diameter of the pilot hole should be half the diameter of the fixing, i.e. drill a 4mm hole for an 8mm coach screw.
